I didn’t even know I liked Lobster rolls. I’m just not sure I ever really had a good one before Luke’s came to town.
I mean, it makes perfect sense, I’ve always been excited about lobster. I love hot dog buns. Certainly consume my fair share of mayonnaise… And now, thanks to Luke’s, I’ve confirmed my love for all of these wonderful ingredients combined.
The first time around, the foodie blogs tipped me off to the new claw in town and I had to try it. I hit the East Vill location a few months after opening. A short line took me into the tiny space dressed up with authentic lobsterman gear like waders and traps.
The first time around I went right for the Lobster Schooner Combo which comes with a Lobster Roll, Maine Root Soda, Miss Vickie’s Chips and a Pickle for $18. A great price for a customer taking advantage of the Ethikus deal, but definitely on the expensive side without the discount. Or maybe I’m just not really an $18 sandwich type of guy. One bite, though, and I was hooked… or, rather… trapped….

Succulant seasoned lobster
The first taste to hit your tongue is the soft buttery roll followed by a deliciously sweet and salty lobster. Luke’s lists ‘secret spices’ as one of their ingredients — I detected a nice hit of celery salt which is the perfect compliment to the succulent lobster meat. The sandwich is stuffed! Too many Lobster Rolls go heavy on the roll, light on the lobster, but that’s not the case at Luke’s. There is no minced up, ground up lobster meat in these sandwiches. The roll is stuffed with juicy pieces of seasoned claw meat and there is only a thin spread of mayo on the roll. I munched that first lobster roll with a Sarsparilla and a bag of Miss Vickie’s Jalapeno chips.

My next trip back was a just a couple of weeks later. Even though I thoroughly loved the Lobster Roll, I decided to taste the Shrimp Roll for Variety. It did not disappoint! Again, the roll was stuffed to the gills with delicious shrimp. Best of all, they weren’t those tiny little pink shrimp the size of your pinky that you get in most shrimp salads. These were nice-sized, fresh white shrimp. This time I tried the Maine Blueberry soda — I highly recommend it!
No need to recount my next 4 trips to Luke’s (Lobster Roll, Lobster Roll, Lobster Roll and Lobster Roll with side of Crab Claws) but suffice it to say I’m a big fan. I’ve visited multiple locations and they have all been great. The staff is friendly, there’s a buzz around the restaurant and patrons are generally happy to slide over and share a table. And now, thanks to Ethikus, you can get a great deal on a combo meal and support real Maine Lobstermen doin it the old fashion way: With Blood, Sweat, and Mayo.
